Fire Extinguisher Servicing

Fire Extinguisher Servicing & Testing

Keep your fire extinguishers ready for use when they are needed most

Fire extinguishers are an important part of your premises’ fire protection, but simply having them in place is not enough. UKFS provides professional fire extinguisher servicing and testing to check that your equipment remains accessible, correctly positioned and in suitable working condition.

Our engineers inspect extinguishers for signs of damage, corrosion, pressure loss and other faults, while checking key components such as hoses, nozzles, pins and seals. We can service a wide range of extinguisher types and advise when repair, replacement or more extensive servicing is required. Our servicing follows the relevant recommendations of BS 5306-3.

Fire Extinguisher Testing FAQs

Regular extinguisher checks help identify faults before firefighting equipment is needed in an emergency.

Here are answers to some of the most common questions about fire extinguisher testing and servicing.

How often should fire extinguishers be serviced?

BS 5306-3 recommends a basic service by a competent person every 12 months, alongside routine visual checks of equipment.

What happens during a fire extinguisher service?

The engineer checks the extinguisher’s condition, pressure or weight where applicable, hose, nozzle, operating mechanism, pin, seal and other relevant components.

Do fire extinguishers need to be replaced after five years?

Not necessarily. Certain extinguisher types require extended servicing at five-year intervals, while others have different maintenance requirements. The engineer can advise based on the specific extinguisher.

Do fire extinguishers expire?

There is not one universal expiry date for every extinguisher. Age, condition, manufacturer guidance and servicing history all help determine whether an extinguisher should remain in service or be replaced.

Can I test my own fire extinguishers?

Routine visual checks can form part of your site’s fire safety arrangements, but professional servicing should be carried out by a competent person with the appropriate knowledge, tools and procedures.

What types of fire extinguishers can UKFS service?

UKFS can service and maintain commonly used extinguisher types, including water, foam, powder and CO2, with the appropriate service requirements applied to each type.
