Fire Alarm Servicing & Testing

Professional testing to help keep your fire alarm system operating when it matters

A fire alarm system needs regular servicing and testing to confirm that its components, controls and warning devices continue to function correctly. UKFS provides professional fire alarm testing for commercial properties, workplaces and other non-domestic premises throughout the UK.

Our engineers inspect and function-test the system, checking equipment such as control panels, detectors, manual call points, sounders, visual indicators, batteries and associated interfaces. Any faults, damage or areas requiring attention are recorded and clearly communicated, giving you a practical understanding of the system’s condition.

Fire Alarm Servicing FAQs

Regular user checks and professional servicing form important parts of effective fire alarm management.

Here are some of the questions we regularly answer about commercial fire alarm testing and maintenance.

How often should a fire alarm be serviced?

Fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises should normally have a weekly user test, while professional inspection and servicing is generally carried out at approximately six-monthly intervals by a competent person. BS 5839-1:2025 allows the professional service interval to fall within a five-to-seven-month window.

What is checked during a fire alarm service?

Testing can include the control panel, detectors, manual call points, sounders, visual indicators, batteries, power supplies and relevant interfaces, together with identifying faults or defects.

Is fire alarm servicing a legal requirement?

The responsible person has a duty to ensure fire detection and alarm systems are maintained in efficient working order. Appropriate inspection, testing and servicing arrangements should therefore be established for the premises.

Who can carry out fire alarm servicing?

Professional inspection and servicing should be undertaken by a person with the appropriate competence, knowledge and experience for the work being performed.

Do I still need to test my fire alarm every week if it is professionally serviced?

Yes. A professional service visit does not replace routine weekly testing by the responsible person or an appropriately trained member of staff.

What happens if a fault is found during a fire alarm test?

The fault should be recorded and assessed so that suitable corrective action can be taken. UKFS can identify the issue during testing and advise on the appropriate remedial work.
